IRS individual online accounts are available to adults.

Personal email address

Use an address you can open during setup.

SSN or ITIN

Enter your Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number.

Use a valid driver’s license, state ID, passport, or passport card.

Phone or computer with a camera

You may need to photograph your ID and take a selfie.

A multi-factor sign-in method

Choose an authenticator app, face or touch unlock, or text messages.

    Choose ID.me

    Select “Sign in with ID.me.” If you already use ID.me for another government service, sign in with that same account—do not create a duplicate.

    Create your ID.me sign-in

    Choose “Create an ID.me account,” enter your personal email, create a password of at least 8 characters, and confirm the email message ID.me sends you.

    Protect your account

    Choose a multi-factor authentication method. Follow the prompts and save any recovery code in a secure place.

    Enter your identity information

    Provide your Social Security number or ITIN and the personal details requested on screen.

If identity verification does not work

Check that your ID is current, the images are clear, and your name and address match your records. ID.me may offer a live video call with a verification agent. Have your original documents ready and follow only the instructions shown on IRS.gov or ID.me.
